The River Kwai of World War II fame is also a scenic waterway flowing
between limestone cliffs and rolling mountains. The Jungle Rafts resort
in Kanchanaburi province is only a two drive and scenic 30-minute
boat ride from Bangkok.
Accommodations on rafts are simple, charming, and comfortable. Even
a one-night visit is well worth-while. Light is provided by lanterns,
and you feel at one with the peaceful river and surrounding forest.
The resort is notable for the relationship which it has established
with the adjacent village, populated by descendants of the ancient
Mon people. Tourism has enabled the traditional Mon dance and life
style to survive here, and visitors enjoy an exuberant dance performance
in the evening.
Activities available include visiting the Mon village, shopping for
inexpensive Mon and Burmese handicrafts, hiking to a large cave, mountain
biking, elephant riding,
canoeing down the River Kwai, or just rocking in a hammock on the
riverside.
